Design Considerations for Swiss-Machined Parts
Practical questions about geometry, material, tolerances, and inspection when designing components for Swiss CNC machining.
Early discussion between design engineers and manufacturing teams can reduce ambiguity and improve the manufacturability of a precision component. The following considerations are general guidance, not a substitute for a part-specific review.
Diameter and bar stock
Check the required starting bar diameter, including any material allowance, against available machine capacity. LONG Precision's current STAR Swiss CNC bar capacity is from 3 mm (0.118 in) to 23 mm (0.906 in).
Long, slender features
Swiss machining can be well suited to slender turned geometry, but length, tool access, material behavior and setup still affect feasibility.
Tolerances and inspection
Specify tolerances according to functional need. Very tight tolerances, surface finish requirements and geometric relationships should be identified early so inspection methods can be considered alongside the process.
Threads, cross-features and finishing
Include full thread specifications, edge requirements, cross-holes, milled features, burr expectations and any post-machining processes in the drawing package.
Production context
Annual volume, release sizes and program life may influence tooling and process planning. Use our RFQ guide when preparing an inquiry.
